ESP KTN has recently been working in conjunction with the Modern Built Environment KTN and the Energy Generation and Supply KTN to look into the issues of Smart DC. Following on from a successful event on the 6th December, ideas were generated for 3 small micro-projects to be funded as part of the Special Interest Group.
- DC Forming – Characterising DC LED/appliance/components for the home/small office. Moxia Technologies
- DC Meter Plan. Cox-Smith Consultants
- Switching and Circuit protection for Smart DC Networks. TRW Conekt in conjunction with GaN Systems
The projects were all displayed at ecoBuild 2012 and created significant interest from attendees at the event.
All 3 projects were carried out on time and on budget, and we are currently awaiting the final report. The feedback from the participants involved in the micro-projects has been very positive, including:
“Thanks very much for looking after us. GaN Systems learnt a great deal from the exercise. We will be teaming with Converter Tecnology on a permanent basis as a result of the work and I intend to follow up with TRW so it has had real value to the UK.’ – Geoff Haynes, GaN Systems
“I believe a non-fiscal version is the viable starting point to market a unit. Next Thursday I have a meeting with Philip Bale, from Western Power Distribution (WPD) who have a project with Siemens. By the way, Philip Bale was someone I met at the SmartDC event.” – Peter Cox-Smith, Cox-Smith Consultants
